Concerns over future of GMIT Mayo campus raised in the Seanad

Concerns over the future of the GMIT campus in Castlebar will be discussed tomorrow when the President of GMIT Dr Fergal Barry will meet with staff at the Mayo campus.

Fears have been expressed in recent weeks about future funding for the Castlebar campus, while the head of the Mayo campus Dr Deirdre Garvey announced her intention to resign from the position last week.

Mayo FG Senator Paddy Burke says he has been assured by Dr Fergal Barry that the Mayo campus will continue, but he says the President and the governing body of GMIT must ensure fair play for all of the GMIT campuses.

He also believes a special fund needs to be set up for the Castlebar campus to advertise and promote the college for the next academic year.

Senator Burke raised the matter with the Education Minister Richard Bruton in the Seanad yesterday.
