Residents of Foxford Housing Estate Remain in the Dark with no Public Street Lighting

A delegation from Neiphin View Estate in Foxford attended yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo county Council, as the residents in this private housing estate of up to 60 houses are without any public lighting for months now.

Their plight was raised by Independent local councillor Seamus Weir who again called on Mayo county council to switch the public lighting on in the estate immediately, despite the fact that the estate has not been taken in charge of by the local authority.

The housing development has been established for 16 years, but its developers have stopped paying the electricity bill and yet have not fully completed the development to make it of a standard that the council will take it in charge.

Local Fine Gael councillor Neil Cruise, accused councillor Weir of playing to the audience and insisted he himself had been working extensively to resolve the situation and said he is confident that the lights will be switched on in the estate before Christmas.

Speaking after the meeting some of the residents told Midwest News they were very disappointed with the response. They insist they pay property tax and regardless of whether ornot the estate is taken in charge of by Mayo county council, it should ensure they have public lighting.

The matter is to be raised again tomorrow (Wed) at the monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District.

Councillor Seamus Weir insists he will not stop raising it until action is taken by Mayo County Council.

He questioned council management yesterday, as to why his proposal that Mayo county council should immediately switch on the lights in the estate , at the October meeting of the authority, that was seconded by councillor Michael Kilcoyne, was not recorded in the minutes of the meeting.

Speaking to Midwest News he expressed his frustration that the public lighting has not been restored, despite the fact that it had been proposed and seconded.
