The new Vice President of America Mike Pence has strong Irish connections.
His grandfather, Mike Cawley, was born and reared in Doocastle on the Mayo/ Sligo border.
He emigrated to the US in 1923.
Mr Pence has visited the Doocastle area with his parents on holidays as a child.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Gerry Lundy told Midwest News today that after the US President and Vice President are inaugurated he hopes that an official invitation will be extended to both men to visit the Tubbercurrry / Doocastle area.
