70 Percent of Second Level Schools Closed Today Due to ASTI Strike Action

Up to 500 second level schools face further closures today as ASTI teachers engage in the second of a series of one day strikes over the issue of equal pay for more recently qualified teachers.
Around 70% of schools will be shut as a result of today's action. Almost 18 thousand teachers will take to the picket lines.
Closures are expected to continue for the remainder of the week for around 400 schools after ASTI teachers, in a related dispute, withdrew from the supervision of students during break times.
The ASTI has said it would be open to the intervention of a third party mediator as a means of trying to resolve the disputes.
