A man who suffered severe head injuries when his parents died at their home is recovering after life saving surgery.

37-year-old Paul Fitzgerald was rushed to hospital after he was found with serious head injuries at his family home near Irishtown on Tuesday afternoon.

His father Tom who was 75 and his mother Kitty who was 72, died in the incident in Knockadoon.

Paul was taken to University Hospital Galway and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where he underwent surgery on Wednesday afternoon according to the Irish Independent.

Post-mortem examinations were carried out yesterday on the bodies of Tom and Kitty and the results are expected to shed more light on what occurred and when the couple died.

The Fitzgeralds’ home remains sealed off by Gardai and is expected to stay that way until at least later tonight.
