Gardai appeal for witnesses after couple were found dead in their home in Irishtown

Investigations are continuing into the deaths of a couple in Mayo.

The remains of Tom Fitzgerald, who was in his 70s and his wife Kitty, who was aged in her 60s, were discovered at their home in Knockadoon near Irishtown.

Emergency services attended the house yesterday afternoon after receiving a call around 3pm and the couple was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 30s was found nearby with head injuries and was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment and later transferred to a hospital in Dublin.

Chief Superintendent Pat Diskin told Midwest News earlier that investigations are ongoing into the incident. He said a technical examination of the scene will take place later today. He said postmortem examinations will take place today or tomorrow.

Chief Superintendent Diskin has appealed to anyone who may have seen anything between Sunday night and Monday afternoon at around 3pm to contact the Gardai in Claremorris on 094-93-72080.

The local parish priest Fr Martin O'Connor told Midwest News last night that Tom and Kitty were a saintly type of couple and their deaths have shocked the entire community.
