Mayo Senator among those who raised her concerns at elements of the Public Health Alcohol Bill at the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party meeting last night

A Mayo Senator was among those who raised her concerns at elements of the Public Health Alcohol Bill at the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party meeting last night.

Senator Michelle Mulherin along with her constituency colleague, Senator Paddy Burke, and 15 other party members raised concerns about the impact of the new legislation on local businesses.

Among the proposals contained in the Bill is to make it illegal to have alcohol on display in shops.

The members said the Government should make sure the move targets large retailers and not local shopkeepers, as it could prove detrimental to their businesses.

Fine Gael members are generally supportive of the Bill, which will include a law restricting the advertisement of alcohol and the introduction of minimum pricing.
