Flood protection works will not be carried out in Westport Town as they would not be cost beneficial.
Councillors in the West Mayo Municipal District were told yesterday that flood prevention works for Westport would cost in the region of 1 million euro, but this exceeds the 650,000 euro in damages that’s estimated would be caused by an extreme flooding event.
The news was delivered to councillors in a presentation by the OPW on the CFRAM report – the Western Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management plan.
In December 2015, heavy rainfall caused the Carrowbeg river in Westport to swell, causing widespread flooding.
Householders and business owners in Westport will be upset and angry to learn that no flood protection works will take place in the town centre, according to the Cathaoirleach of the West Mayo Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, who says it’s very disappointing news…..
