Minister Sean Canney, who has responsibility for the OPW and for flooding, is committed to solving issues around channel maintenance of the River Deel in Crossmolina, in order to tackle flooding problems – that’s according to Mayo FG Senator Michelle Mulherin who raised the issue at the Oireachtas Finance Committee this week.

Senator Mulherin says residents in Crossmolina live in fear of further flooding this Winter, and steps must be taken in the short-term to prevent flooding, as the construction of major flood defences will take a number of years.

There’s been much controversy about clearing the River Deel, and Minister Canney says this is a matter for an interdepartmental group, but is a major issue for him.
