High Court asked to review decision to grant Apple permission for data centre in Galway

The High Court has been asked to review the decision to grant Apple permission to build an 850 million euro data centre in Co Galway.
This time last year, Galway County Council approved Apple’s plans for a data centre on a site near Athenry owned by Coillte.
Apple said it would create 300 construction jobs and 150 jobs thereafter.
The council’s decision was appealed on a number of grounds, including flooding fears and the impact on the environment and climate change.
Last month, An Bord Pleanala upheld the Council’s decision and gave the go-ahead for the development.
However, the High Court was today asked to consider a judicial review of that decision.
Papers raising concerns about the decision-making process were handed into court by a lay litigant.
Apple was not put on notice of today’s application, and the case has been adjourned until 17th October.
