A new study shows that there was a notable increase in the number of people working locally in 5 of the 7 labour catchments across Co Mayo over the past decade, but there was a decline in those working in rural areas.

The Westport, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Swinford and Ballina areas all recorded an increase in the number of residents working in the area, while in Belmullet, the number of workers employed locally fell by just under 10%, and by 12.5% in the Charlestown-Knock Airport catchment area.

The study by the Western Development Commission compared Census employment data from 2006  and 2016, and shows that Westport has continued to grow as an employment hub, with a 31% increase in the number of local residents working in the area.

It also shows the ongoing decline in the numbers employed in agriculture.
