A Fianna Fail European election candidate says the two-tier pay structure for school secretaries is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.
Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte, who's contesting the European elections in the Midlands-Northwest constituency, says 10% of the 3,500 school secretaries across the country are employed by the Department of Education, while the 90% majority are paid out of school funding, which also pays for caretakers and school supplies.
This means that 90% of school secretaries do not enjoy the same benefits as their counterparts - as there's no sick leave, pensions or safeguards.
Deputy Rabbitte is calling on the Education Minister Richard Bruton to tackle this anomaly, and recognise the work of all school secretaries equally.
She says talks must get underway between the Government and the trade union, following an adjudication of the Workplace Relations Commission in 2015.
