With Storm Helene passing over Ireland in the coming days, AA Ireland is warning motorists to exercise additional caution.

Met Eireann has extended a status yellow rainfall warning to five counties - Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal - until 5am tomorrow morning.

With a large volume of rainfall expected in a short space of time, AA Ireland is urging  motorists in these areas to slow down, and leave extra distance between themselves and other road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.

Met Eireann forecaster Joan Blackburn told Midwest News that heavy downpours can be expected this afternoon and evening, with up to 40 mm of rainfall by morning.
