Walkers from across the region raised in excess of 46,000 euro for Gena Heraty’s Haiti Charity in a fund raising walk, that took place last June.

The walk, led by Midwest Radio’s Tommy Marren, along the greenway in Westport, was all in aid of local woman Gena Heraty who has been working in Haiti for more than 25 years running an orphanage for children with disabilities, close to Porto Prince.

The total figure raised by participants was 46,475 euro.

RTE’s Nationwide presenter Mary Kennedy and singer Eleanor Shanley  joined Tommy and the  walkers in the Castlecourt Hotel in Westport at the weekend where a buffet and presentation took place.

The evening also included a presentation of photos taken by members of the Westport-Haiti fundraising committee, who had been in Haiti last year.

Speaking at the presentation night where the cheque was formally presented to Gina’s fund, Ann Corcoran of the Castlecourt Hotel described the total raised as phenomenal and praised the generosity of all those who both walked and contributed to the effort.
