The fixed charge fine for drivers who park illegally in disabled parking spaces needs to be substantially increased – that’s according to the Social Democrats’ candidate for Roscommon-Galway, Ken Campbell.

Ballinasloe-based Mr Campbell, who has a daughter with special  needs, is calling on Ministers Finian McGrath and Shane Ross to substantially increase the current 80 euro fine for those who park in spaces designated for disabled drivers, without a valid permit.

He says the current fine is obviously not enough of a deterrent, while fines cannot currently be issued to drivers parking in disabled spaces in supermarket car parks or other private facilities.
