Cargo ship runs aground in Connemara

A cargo ship has gone aground in Cashla Bay in Connemara, Co. Galway this morning.

The ship, which is German owned but registered in Canada, had arrived in the bay yesterday and was due to pick up two passenger ferry boats at Rossaveal Harbour today.

The ferry boats had been repossessed by a bank and were sold in Galway last month.

The ship dragged its anchor at around 6am this morning and is now aground on the shore.

Emergency services are at the scene.
