Two North Mayo schools are to receive funding to replace prefab units with permanent accommodation.
Lahardane National School and Cloghans National School in Ballina will receive funding from a 15 million euro national scheme announced this morning by the Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn.
It’s part of a government programme that began in 2010, to replace temporary accommodation in schools with permanent structures.
Mayo Fine Gael deputy John O’Mahony told Midwest News today that he has campaigned for some time to get rid of pre-fabs at schools.
He says he is aware of schools paying anything between 70 and 80,0000 euro a year rent for a prefab and he believes that money could be used more effectively in education.
