Two Westport Gardai rescue driver from the sea
- Details
Two Westport Gardai came to the rescue of a driver, who ended up in the sea in the early hours of Sunday morning last.
A car went over the Quay wall at about 4 am Sunday morning, and the front half of the vehicle was suspended over the sea.
The passenger managed to get out on the ground, while the driver dropped into the freezing water.
The passenger flagged down a passing patrol car, and Garda Mark Irwin and Garda John Boyle climbed down a ladder, becoming half-submerged in water themselves, and they made their way along a ledge before bringing the man to safety.
The man was brought to the Mayo General Hospital and was released later on Sunday.
Gardai Mark Irwin had also been involved in the rescue of a man who crashed into a lake near Westport three weeks earlier.
