1200 Take part in Westport Sea2Summit Race

It was another busy weekend for Westport with 1200 competitors in the Westport Sea2Summit race.

A snow-covered Croagh Patrick greeted the hardy competitors.

The 1,200 entrants struggled up a windswept and snowy mountain yesterday.

Several centimetres of snow covered the upper reaches of the peak, making the normally difficult terrain even more hazardous.

The adventure race sees competitors run 4.5km before jumping on their bicycles for a 9km spin and then climbing 5km along Croagh Patrick. This is followed by another 35km cycle and a 4km run, which includes a dash through the waters of the Atlantic and an obstacle course.

Entrants to the 'supreme' version of the event cover a total distance of 56.5km, while those taking part in the 'spirit' category have a slightly easier 27.5km. But this year they also got rain, hail and sleet.

First man over the line was Gerard Corcoran from Westport who completed the 'supreme' course in three hours, seven minutes and 24 seconds. The winner of the women's race was Tipperary-native Ann Marie Egan, who crossed the line some 40 minutes later.
