Druid Theatre co-founder Garry Hynes has won the best director honour at the UK Theatre Awards in London.
The Ballaghadereen native won the award for her work on Druid Murphy – Plays by Tom Murphy which received critical acclaim in the Hampstead Theatre, London, last June. The plays – Conversations on a Homecoming, A Whistle in the Dark and Famine – tell the story of Irish emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The three plays were also brought to the New York stage by the Druid troupe.
Receiving her award at London’s Guildhall at the weekend, Hynes dedicated it to the playwright Tom Murphy, and to all of those, on and off stage, who helped to make the Druid Murphy happen.
