Westport Gardai say a woman, whose car went over the quay in Newport on Sunday morning, remains in a critical condition this evening at the Intensive Care Unit of Mayo General Hospital.

The woman, who’s from Hungary and had been living in the Newport area, was on her own in the Opel Corsa at about 9.30 on Sunday morning, when the vehicle went over the quay and into the river.

The alarm was raised by a passerby, and fire and ambulance personnel responded quickly and rescued the woman from the submerged car.

Westport Gardai say the woman, who’s understood to be in her mid-30’s, remains in a critical condition.
