Archdeacon Sean Durkan, of Ballina, a former chairman of Mayo GAA county board will be laid to rest this afternoon in the grounds of St Muredach’s Cathedral.
He was one of the best known priests in the Killala Diocese and was a key figure in the successful Knockmore GAA Team of the late 1970s.
Retired for a number of years, Archdeacon Durkan served in a number of parishes in the diocese, always taking an active role in community development.
Another former chairman of the Mayo GAA County Board and of Knockmore GAA and active in GAA nationally, Paddy Naughton paid a warm tribute to the Archdeacon on Midwest News this morning. He said Sean Durkin always demanded high standards and will be sadly missed in his native Knockmore and in the wider counties of Mayo and Sligo where he worked.
