Mayo Co Co has not ruled out asking for proof of Household Charge payment, before processing third-level grant applications

A number of local authorities in the west are considering asking third-level students applying for grants to submit proof that they have paid the household charge.
It emerged yesterday that Clare County Council is insisting on proof that the charge has been paid, before processing applications from hundreds of students applying for grant renewals.
Mayo Co Co says it has not ruled out the possibility of asking those applying for student grants to provide proof that their families have paid the Household Charge.
Council officials in Mayo have struck a deal that 75% compliance with the Household Charge would avoid a cut of €2.6 million in the council’s budget this year.
Roscommon County Council is considering the situation, and is likely to follow the lead set by Clare County Council,
Sligo County Council says it’s exploring all options available to the local authority
While Galway County Council says it has no such plans.
The Environment Minister Phil Hogan said the councils are following instructions to increase Household Charge compliance rates, which stand at just over 60% nationally.
Otherwise, the local authorities face cuts in their budgets.
However, the Department of Education said last night that councils cannot refuse to pay out college grants on foot of non-payment of the Household Charge.
A spokesperson said the Department had not been consulted or informed of the councils’ move.
