Manchester Mayor to be honoured in Attymass

The Lord Mayor of Manchester is to take part in an official engagement in the parish of Attymass tomorrow to mark its links to the north of England city.

Mayor Elaine Boyes will be welcomed to the village tomorrow morning at the Fr Peyton Centre before a special Mass celebrated by Parish Priest of Attymass at 10.30am. An official citation will be read highlighting the connections between Attymass and Manchester, and the Mayor will plant a tree to mark her visit.

Mayor Boyes will be accompanied in Attymass by Anthony and Lawrence Hennigan – who are prominent members of Manchester’s Irish community.

The Lord Mayor of Manchester is in Mayo as a guest of the Mayo Emigrant Liaison Committee and her visit to Attymass is part of a series of engagements here.

Tonight (Saturday) she will attend the 2012 Irish Diaspora Awards, presented by Mayo Emigrant Liaison Committee.

Among the winners this year area Minister Michael Ring, the Manchester Irish Festival Committee, former Lord and Lady Mayoress of Leeds Jim and Andrea McKenna, the Addergoole Titanic Committee and the Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool. Brendan Mulvey of Birmingham, known to Midwest Radio listeners, is also among those to be honoured at the event which takes place at the Welcome Inn Hotel in Castlebar tonight.
