Galway Labour Senator says farm and business assets should not be included in deciding third-level grants

A Labour Senator in Galway has come out against her party’s proposals to include farm and small business assets in deciding eligibility for third-level grants.
Labour Education Minister Ruairi Quinn proposed in the last Budget that capital assets be included in the means test, and a working group is due to report back to the Minister shortly.
A number of backbench Fine Gael TD’s have already spoken out against such a move, and now Galway East Senator Lorraine Higgins has said that the farming and business communities must not become scapegoats in any reform of third-level grants.
