  • This weekend Mayo & District Motorsport club has a large number of members competing in the Midlands Rally which is based in the Longford area.  John Warren and Ruthann O'Connor are competing in their Toyota Corolla; Achill’s Brian Lavelle & Shane Corcoran are out in a Honda Civic; Keith McFadden & Sara McFadden are out in their Renault Clio Cup; another Castlebar duo Gordon Nimmo and Chrystal Culkeen are competing in their Supermacs Ford Fiesta R2; Karl Egan is co driving for Jason Black in a Toyota Starlet; and Paul McGee is co driving for Ian Barrett in a Darrian T90 GTR.

    In the juniors Jason Murphy and Matthew Murphy compete in a Honda Civic; also in a Honda - Ballina’s Derek McCarthy is co-driving for Stephen Reynolds.  Best of luck to all.

    A large team of marshals also travelled to Longford from the club to help out for the day, big thanks to all.

     

  • This weekend is another busy one for Mayo and District Motorsport Club members with two rally crews competing in the Moonraker Forestry Rally in Ballyvourney today (Saturday 13th)   After last weekend co-driving Jason Murphy returns to the driving seat with Matthew Murphy co-driving,  Ella Conway with co-driver Jared Gill are also back in action in their Peugeot.

    Tomorrow Ballaghadereen’s Steven Cafferty is competing in the Clare Autocross in Ballycumber.

  • Mayo and District Motorsport Club have a number of members competing in the Donegal Forestry Rally today.  Shrule’s Jason Murphy with Matthew Murphy on the notes are competing in the junior class in their Honda Civic  and in the J1000 class Newport’s Ella Conway with Jared  Gill co-driving take to the road in their Peugeot 107.  The event takes place around Bundoran.

    Tomorrow Steven Cafferty from Ballaghadereen travels to Ballycumber to compete in the Clare Motorclub Loose Surface Autocross, this is a round of both the National Autocross Championship and the Munster Autocross Championship.      

     

  • Mayo Motorsport Club members travel to Limerick to compete today (Sunday) in the Circuit of Munster Rally.  Keith McFadden with Sara McFadden on the notes are competing in class 3 in their Renault Clio, while Ballina’s Derek McCarthy is co-driving for Stephen Reynolds in a Honda Civic.

  • Mayo & District Motorsport Club was out in force for the Birr Stages Rally which took place on Sunday (23rd). This was also the opening round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship for 2019.  Top of the Mayo competitors was Karl Egan who was co-driving for Jason Black in a Toyota Starlet RWD, they had a great day and led their class throughout the event.  They took the honours in Class 11R and finished in 27th place overall.

    Sara McFadden was back in the hot seat navigating for her Dad Keith.  After picking up an award at the inaugural Mayo Garda Youth Awards in Ballina on Saturday night she travelled to Birr and guided Keith home to fourth place in Class 3 and 81stplace overall.

    Westport’s Stephen McGing was co-driving for Andrew Leacy in a Darrian T9, they finished eleventh in Class 13 and were 83rd overall.   Gordon Nimmo with co-driver Chrystal Culkeen were competing for the first time this season in their SuperMacs Ford Fiesta, they finished sixth in Class 11F and were 91st overall.

    The Birr Stages Rally also marked the inaugural round of the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series.  This new series is aimed at drivers under 25 years of age using class 16 (J1600) cars and involves drivers competing in various tarmac and gravel events throughout the motorsport calendar.    Jason Murphy who is no stranger to Forestry events was competing for the first time on tarmac and also had a new co-driver on board for the weekend, John Burke sat in for regular co-driver Matthew Murphy and he guided Jason home to third in Class 16 and seventh place overall in the Juniors.  

    Next up is the Limerick Forestry Rally which takes place next weekend (3rd March).

  • This weekend Mayo and District Motorsport Club members travel to Monaghan for the 2019 Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan Stages Rally.   This event is a round of both the Triton Showers National Rally Championship and the Sligo Pallets Border Rally Championship.

    Karl Egan is co-driving for Jason Black in a Toyota Starlet, they compete in class 11R.  In class 11F, Brian Lavelle and Shane Corcoran are out in their Honda Civic; John Warren and Ruthann O'Connor are competing in their Toyota Corolla in class 13; in class 3 Castlebar crew Keith McFadden with daughter Sara on the notes compete in their Renault Clio; in class 16 Ballina’s Derek McCarthy is co-driving for Stephen Reynolds in a Honda Civic.

    Recce and scrutiny take place on Saturday, with the first car leaving the start line at rally headquarters - the Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan on Sunday morning.

  • This weekend sees Mayo & District Motorsport Club members heading to the Limerick Forestry Rally for the second round in the Valvoline Forestry Rally Championship. 

    Jason Murphy and co-driver Matthew Murphy are competing in class 16 in a Honda Civic, Jason had his first tarmac rally last weekend when he competed at the Birr Stages Rally.  

    Ella Conway with co-driver Jared Gill are back in action in their Peugeot 107.  This is Ella’s first year in competitive motorsport and while she had a great first day out in Carrick on Suir in January when they finished fifth in the J1000 class, she will be hoping to better this result in Limerick.

     

  • With less than two weeks to go until the annual rally fever hits Sligo and its surrounds, entry levels are very encouraging, well ahead of same point in recent years. This has also been driven by a series of Incentives to attract entries in early, where an entrant can win back a portion of their entry fee. The first draw sponsored by the Carty Group , a second one on the closing date and a further one sponsored by National Automation , a Faac associate company , to take place on the morning of the event.

    Being a round of three prestigious championship, the Triton National, the Sligo Pallets Border and the Top Part West Coast Championship is undoubtedly a factor in Sligo Stages appeal, but the quality and atmosphere surrounding the event is also well renowned . The July date is embedded in the motorsport calendar bringing large crowds to the region generating valuable revenue among the hospitality sector throughout the county.  

    The Faac Simply automatic / Sligo Park Hotel Stages Rally is scheduled to take place on Sunday July 8th , with Scrutiny and pace note making on the Saturday. Mechanical Scrutiny brings a unique twist to this years event as the operation takes place in the spectator friendly venue of Sligo Retail Park in Carraroe, commencing at 14.30 and sponsored by Sligo Haulage and Distribution, where enthusiasts , young and old can observe rally cars put through rigorous safety checks in advance of hitting the stages next morning.

    The event proper kicks off on Sunday morning with the first car due to depart parc ferme at the Retail Park in Carraroe,  at 9.45am, with Knocknarea and Queen Maeve’s grave as a backdrop . The cars head to the west of the county for stage one , sponsored by Herron Auto, a demanding technical test with numerous challenging  junctions . Stage two , sponsored by Glenview Decorative Stone , holds memorable historic links and a brave stage for the undaunted . The third stage of the loop , supported by Kerrigan Quarries , contains more faster flowing speed carrying sections , before the cars return to service.

    The service park, sponsored by neighbouring complex, Gulf / Hot Rods , which is visited on two occasions , enables crews to carry out essential maintenance before going out on a further loop.

    Apart from the high level of outsider interest, there is a substantial degree of local sporting rivalry, both within classes and neighbourhoods. An award for the fastest local finisher, sponsored by Mc Gowan Landscapes has injected a new goal for prospective crews, among the nearing thirty current Connacht Motor Club members entered.

    The first crew is due back at the finish ramp at rally headquarters, Sligo Park Hotel on the Sunday evening at 17.15 to be awarded the winning title for 2018.
